Vivo goes GSM with Ericsson

Ok, everyone knew that Vivo was going GSM, but here you can see the news about ericsson being the infrascructure provider for that bold move. http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?ContentId=6592

This is so nice. I really want to see how much Qualcomm will loose in this movement. Vivo has around 25 million customers in it’s cdma network, and to see them smoothly turning to gsm will for sure have some impact on Cdma phones sales in Brazil.

Sweet.

Wii to cost 170 USD

It seems that Nintendo is getting ready to shake the 3rd console generation pretty hard. To be able to buy one Wii + xbox360 + games for the price of one psp does sound incredible, and even more incredible is that the price of 1 xbox360 you can buy 1 wii + 2 games + accessories =) Yeah. yeah yeah! I think it’s time to prepare my wallet and get ready to enter the 3rd gaming era. Brazil really sucks for buying those consoles, but I will be riding one Wii as soon as possible!

Web App development frameworks smash up, for those that need some of the “Which big company is using it?”

Well, I’ve just watched and it’s simple, fast and direct to the point : j2ee sucks for web application development. Ok We already knew it but when it comes from j2EE lovers like the folks at NASA… yeah it has some impact. The argument behind it all? Fast turnaroud. I can’t agree more with that.
so, point your browser to : http://oodt.jpl.nasa.gov/better-web-app.mov and take a look at a simple “fight” between the main options for web development available today.

Real Linux phone?

If Trolltech releases this baby really opened as we expected, be prepared for some really incredible stuff to show up in the mobile world. All linux powered phones till now are only linux enabled, but not “open” for development what make them almost useless from the opensource perspective. Trolltech is releasing this beast as a developer’s tool, but I really believe this will turn out being the starting point to a revolution in mobile phone open source platforms. I really wish it could have a real X out of the box… but Qtopia’s approch is also great for embedded devices, and, if this green baby is really open to developers, nothing can stop us to put some things running there.

Lets wait! more details here and here in trolltech’s official website for the greenphone.

So sad for you, not able to read farsi. Kidding! There’s translation for french, english and arabic :p

The most useless wifi add-on ever

It’s incredible how people can be stupid. Ok, macbooks have a crappy wi-fi range and need some tweak. But creating an AC powered antenna to solve it? Please someone kill me?

Short news to start the day… I hate mondays (awful clichê, I know)

For the Opensource or openformat freaks out there : Pocket ogg is a very nice Music player with ogg support for S60 3rd phones.  Well, OggPlayer looked way better than this one… is it 3rd compliant already?

Well, we don’t need another acronym, like “FLUI” but I sure like the idea of using some vector based technology to create UIs, like IRiver clix and U10 media players, and now Phones are really starting on it. Check it out the 1st,2nd and 3rd level of LG’s chocolate user interface to see flash in action on a commercial mobile phone. Clicking here. My doubt: how much is it scalable? How far can we go with flash interfaces? Does it worth having a 3rd party software running all the time to provide the UI? Unm, sounds kind of risky to me.

Now, running in the opposite direction than sony, MS has announced it’s plain to release tools for homebrew development for the Xbox 360. I think  MS got it PRETTY right this time. What is Sony thinking? PSP is only  as big as it is today because of homebrew, and sony wants to get rid of it! Ok being able to load isos is not a good thing but, sony should come up with a developer friendly enviroment or sandbox and really push the homebrew scene further.

Some really cool stuff is going on in the Second life “world”. Starwood Hotels & Resorts version of a new unit in the virtual garden. It sounds great and I really want to see more of this coming up in the future.

The best of wdc2006

xcode3
Well, I forgot to talk about the best thing that happened in Apple’s developers gathering. After all is a “developer’s” meeting right? So… The announced the new X-code, version 3 that at least in the screenshots do some pretty cute things with your code, and has some very cuty error dialogs. Not sure how useful is that, but for a wannabe developer like me it sure looks way more attractive than emacs or vim. (kidding, I’m using textmate right now for coding - great app ).

xray debugger
But What really got me whas: The x-ray debugger with the garage-band like interface. I’m really looking forward to use it. Nice to see some real UI love for such developer-oriented software. Developer do like nicely designed things. Other feature that I don’t know yet how to absorb is : Objective-C 2.0 with garbage collection. Please, I need more details on that, mainly performance details. Anyways, nice touch to really bring more developers onboard without letting them code using those awful java toolkits.
