Update on this issue.

Birdstep SmartConnect is available for all NSeries devices, and does a much better job than Psiloc Connect on my N95 8GB

HI Krisse,

Thanks for the input. I am aware that Nokias is fixing problems, the problem is more that there are too many (legacy problem?) and some of then, are not question of being designed for this or that. But is bad even for those who use paid for access by time / data.

iPhone, jailbroken or unlocked (thus used outside of it's designed scope) is indeed not a good interface as it could be. But even that it performs in the opposite case way better than nokia on both cases. But indeed is not a good idea, but it gives you an way of canceling the connection. My Nokia doesn't give me a chance of saying "I am on unlimeted plan".

The thing is really : Trying to analyze the error as deep as possible and do a real fix, not a placebo in a phone, or a incremental change that slowly ease the pain (if you update your phone on release basis)

I think I should clarify that my point here is to talk about those issues that became common in nokia (design problems that gets worse and worse) and even without data plan they are really bogus to use.

A couple of points:

-S60 5th Edition (on the 5800 and N97) is much better at prioritising access points. It automatically tries to use your usual WLAN/Wi-Fi, but if that's not available it automatically tries to use your SIM card's internet connection. You can set different priorities for different apps if you want to.

-The iPhone is not available with unlimited data in all countries, and some people may be buying it SIM-free for use with an unknown data plan, so designing the interface entirely around that assumption of unlimited data isn't necessarily a good idea.

Yes, I face the same problem on the e51 and it's really annoying. I think those devices are called "smartphones" for a reason and users deserve a better experience on connected applications (and believe me, this is also a real pain for developers too).

Great post!

Hi Adrien and Jonathan! Thanks for the links. I was aware of the applications, but this is the problem: the out of the box experience is way below the today's expectations for the connected device.

But, being a heavy nokia user, I know that the guys can actually work and change this situation :) This should be not an app but the platform working for you and the applications developer in order to keep things in a healthy level :)

Anyhow, a little complaint here and there can help the speed up at least 0.00001% right? :)

Hey dude.

This is damn annoying. I use the sip client 24/7 and when I'm home I'd prefer using my 12Mb Broadband, but I have to manually switch, and using many access points usually ends up bugging the client, and I need to re-set it all.

I'm looking for solutions, but I know of two.

You have 2 options.
* Smart Connect from Birdsomething that I can't use on my N95 8GB because it's only licenced by nokia for some models from E series, but heard ppl say that works fine. It's free and available on Download!
* Psiloc Connect that didn't work for me. ( maybe because it was a BinPDA version? ) But seems to do the same thing

This is definitely a pain point on S60 ... I've been using an application called SmartConnect on the E71 which lets you define groups and you can mix wifi and cell together. Once you have your stack you can narrow down the number of times you need to go through the network configuration process.
