Links for all your mobile platform and device needs

Not all of them but at least can help you figure out your own answers, or better: bets for the future of mobile platforms.

Starting a little bit old, but a nice yet simple point of view from Alistair Croll here where he shares with me the surprise to know that the n810 is a step out of a full dance.

Of course he talks about Android, and this new Google adventure is already bringing up a lot of reviews, sometimes not the kind of reviews google fans would like to read. For me the most important: is it going to improve or not interoperability? PC advisor article points to not, but I’m inclined to think that yes. BBC brings a note about Symbian’s opinion with the basic line :

Google’s dominance of the web will not translate to the mobile phone market, a senior executive at Symbian has said.

Which I totally agree. For more on android, get to know the man behind it here, a “this is pure PR” based article here, then there’s a nice FAQ here, courtesy of BBC, a Zdnet article full of analyst’s opinions here and a ok article at gizmodo here. A note: I do not only believe in what android is after (an open platform) that I also am very proud to see that my buddies at work (INdT) have always pushed this thing further, and more proud when I think of openMoko, the one which is truly an open mobile phone software stack blabla. And to finish this the all might question : “will Android kill the iPhone?” the question is here
but I would say that would be more probable to have Android powering a future iPhone (I know, linux is not bsd, iPhone has it own “cocoa” Application framework, but I just want to make it hard) than killing it.

Enough of Android, I was happy to read that EA is donating Simcity for the OLPC project! Better yet, the guy behind the port to python, is the guy who did the multiplayer version of the game, fitting pretty nice on the XO laptop goals, that is collaboration and learning between the kids.

On the iPhone side, it’s now officially on Europe, and T-mobile has released the figures for the first day : 10.000 units. Not bad, but I think people were expecting more.

speaking of internet tablets, take a look at the first part of Reggie’s from ITT video going through the features and hardware design of the Nokia N810 : here

Offtopic : Expect the unexpectable

This video shows one of the evil sides of manhood. You simply do not expect what is going to happen. The guy almost exhales humbleness and modesty and gives you a incredible chill with his talent.

News, news and more news

So this weeks has been quite busy. Not only in the projects I’m working on (that goes far from the n800 platform) but also in the mobile world.

First, Palm Foleo
foleo

Ok, Palm released this little-big guy and apart from all critics and good reviews one thing I can say is:
It’s hell of a nice linux device. But I wouldn’t say it’s a hell of a nice “companion”. And Please don’t say it’s a smartphone. It’s far from being a smartphone. It’s a smartphone big brother at most.

foleo

I agree that “convergence” is nice, but quite hard to achieve, but separating devices is not converging. There will be people falling in love for the Foleo as a small laptop but not as a truly mobile device.

foleo

Question arises: Is that really the way to go? Supply a screen and a keyboard to “attack” the small screens defects?

While I kind of like the Foleo as a linux device, for me it should be a lot smaller. Thumb keyboards are cool for the fast on the go working, and come on… mobile email doesn’t need to come in such a big package. I hate typing on the screen, like in the n800 but that wouldn’t make me go to a Foleo kind of device. I completely agree with some people saying that it looks like a crappy mini dell. Yes, this should be pretty clear to users that this is not a subnotebook like those products that failed with windows CE on the past. Actually in the end, the very very simple UI could be the gate for scaping the failure. Also, a lot of linux hackers would love to create “working” machines out of those.
Foleo and N800
size. It really matters

Now, new nokia Design available
Nokia Has announced some new phones. And apart from the last one, which has a 2 color design I liked the other 2. Actually the “luna” device doesn’t get me that much, they keypad is kind of hard to use, but I’m felling quite good about the 6500. It’s slim, and the most important it doesn’t look like a copy of a motorola or samsung phone. Its Nokia. Has identity. I like that.
6500
The 6500 has a lot of nice and welcoming design choices to Nokia, and the article showing how they did it is transcribed on ring nokia, if you like product design worth the reading.

The other slide device is really, really a drawback. Sorry Nokia, you hit big on the 6500 but in this one, it’s just the opposite. When it’s open reminds me of the old SE t610. In that time it could be nice, but not now.

Great N95 ad. I’m using the phone right now. It was supposed to be incredible but I just can’t make the GPS works and it’s freezing a little bit too much. It must be a old firmware. =)

New VMWare beta can load vista from bootcamp partition

Yeah, this is sweet. As I couldn’t do it with Parallels, and I didn’t want to have 2 copies of vista in the HD, I think I will stay with VMWare. I will miss Coherence mode, but I think I can for sure go without it. Kudos for VMware team.

New lap top finally arrived!

New lap top finally arrived!, originally uploaded by MarceloEduardo.

Yeah, the g4 was on it’s end of life with me, but deserved a rest. Now the core 2 duo is being tested against my heavy usage tests =)

What I can say about the new core 2 duo : it’s fast. It can handle my crazyness of 200 tabs on firefox + lots of photoshop + mail + itunes + vlc + quicksilver + iCal + Adium + a lot of small applications.
