Canola2 beta7 is out, youtube is out (with sources) and more to come
So you can already download the new canola from the application installer and put it to test.
The beta7 brings the major modifications to allow third party plugins and youtube was developed like one. It’s indeed a full example because it has also “theme” files so if you are a python fan and would like to develop a plugin for your Canola, just grab the source and take a look.
Now we need to rush to add support to change the folder (it’s saving on internal disk) and also make sure you have latest mplayer, if not you will face some slowdowns in playback.
Known issue : Seek does not work. The FLV support does not give us a good seek, so we removed it because it was almost usable and really annoying. Let’s see if we can help mplayer in the future in this matter.
Marcelo,
I have spent the last month plus reading through ittalks forums, and wanted to express to you my thankfulness, appreciation, and respect for the time you put into your work, and the level of support you provide to your users. I have watched many people send the same requests, complaints, and bug lists, seemingly without even reading the information within the same thread, and you reply with calm and aplomb. Bravo!
I have worked in InfoTech for over 20 years, and now work in retail, and must say that you are exceptionally professional in your responses. Thank you for all of your work and hard efforts.
I sent this to you here, as opposed to on the forums, so that you would understand I am not tying this into any one of your many projects.
Have a great day!

I’ve tried the YouTube plugin and while it’s great, it leaves the videos it shows under .canola2 dir in users home wasting precious internal Flash space.
IMHO it should do caching to MMC if one is available with enough space and to a directory that user can see from the file manager and remove. I don’t think people are going to look at Youtube videos after they close Canola, so they could be removed at that time too.
It would be nice if lists could be scrolled also with the scroll keys or there would be a scrollbar, the iPhone style scrolling doesn’t always work so well (one can easily accidentally select something) because it’s not as responsive as iPhone (I know there are reasons for this, but N800/N810 have scroll keys unlike iPhone so user should be able to use them too).
March 28th, 2008 at 10:23 amHi Maemo dev, I was going to answer by email, but as I think the email is just for filling the field here it goes :
We are not crazy :) this was not the “real” place, and there’s a download folder path variable to hold the real place, but we wanted to add and receive bugs without waiting for the “downloads” folder options (that is going to be now on new beta on settings) this will not only solve the problem for youtube but also for podcast. The thing is that we had one new kind of list to implement, and we don;t like to do hacks :/
(but being really honest, I learned the lesson, and next time I face a situation like that I will hold on until the very basic things are solved, my mistake)
Actually, doing “assumptions” like I think (I saw you were very polite with the IMHO) is quite complicated and that’s my daily challenge: I try not to “think” but I try talking to real users. Point : They REALLY want to have it on the disk and automatically added to their real video library. That’s why we kept only the last one on memory for a little time to avoid problems if you accidentally clicked back and want to keep watching the movie (so you don’t need to re-download)
Yeah, I agree with the scrollkeys, and I added here in the blog how it’s going to work (see the previous post) it’s actually quite nice modal scroll control ( you have scroll as basic, and if click on middle, it changes to playback control) so you will be able to control music also with them from anywhere :)
Yeah, we went a little bit too bold going “capacitive-like” but as everyone was doing the other way we really think as an alternative way of trying the tablets. While problematic, it worked for a lot of people (and didn’t for a lot also)
We are very aware, but we left lower in priority due to development capacity :) now we are finishing the planning critical features and moving to those additional, but also really needed features.
Cheers,
Marcelo
